Isabel Allende's new novel follows two refugees from the Spanish Civil War, whose mock marriage as they flee to Chile gradually deepens into real love, set against a backdrop of war and upheaval.
Isabel Allende is one of my favorite authors. Ever since reading her short story, Walimai, I have appreciated many of her works. This story is a human tale that covers the life of a man who lived through the Spanish revolution, took refuge in Chile, and experienced yet again an uprising when Pinochet came into power. The man suffered physically and overcame hardship to become a recognized heart surgeon. He does not marry out of love but does experience deep deep love. It is the story of a long life and all of the twists and turns.
I loved it because I have been spending so much time with my 90 year old father and it makes me realize that our elders have lived such rich lives and we don't always know the details.
We have to ask.
We have to hear their stories.
